March 7th...Reminder! Please take a minute and submit testimony in support of SB 00413. This bill will make changes to the law to ensure that health care providers clearly understand the certification
requirements while also providing law enforcement with the required tools to properly enforce placards by redesigning the placard to show the expiration date clearly. Both of these changes will ensure accessible parking spaces are available and easily enforceable. Just do it:) Tt will only take a few minutes but can make all the difference! Thank you!

March 11... A quick update for those following our testimony on SB 00413
This bill proposes something very simple:
health care professionals who certify accessible parking placards would watch a short educational video once every six years explaining the criteria used to determine eligibility.
After the hearing, we came home and started researching.
What we found was surprising.
We could not find any formal training anywhere in the United States specifically designed to help health care providers understand the certification criteria for accessible parking placards.
Health care professionals already receive education on many important public health issues such as opioid prescribing, domestic violence awareness, and suicide prevention. These trainings exist because providers play an important role in systems that affect the broader community.
Accessible parking certification is just as important.
When a provider signs a placard application, they are helping determine access to a public program that many people with mobility disabilities depend on every day.
So we believe that one hour of education every six years to better understand the criteria is a reasonable step that helps protect the integrity of the program.
If there is currently no structured education at all, it raises an important question:
How can we expect consistent decisions when certifying placards if providers are never given clear guidance about the program?
Accessible parking is a critical and necessary program, and we think it should be treated as such.
