I am a wheelchair user traveling with a personal care assistant who helps me with essential needs such as eating, using headphones, and communication during travel.
I was assigned a wheelchair space with a table, and the seat directly is designated as an accessible seat. To ensure I can safely and comfortably participate in the trip, it is necessary for my assistant to occupy that seat to provide assistance as needed. This allows me to utilize my travel as other travelers do.
This request is called a reasonable modification under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to ensure equal access and use of Amtrak services. It does not present an undue burden and is consistent with the purpose of the accessible seating area.
Yet, time and time again, we are spending time and energy trying to explain these simple accommodations to Amtrak Why oh WHY am I constantly fighting for equal treatment on Amtrak!
ALWAYS speak up for your rights in a dignified manner! Stay tuned I'll post as I move up the Amtrak ladder!
