What are the qualifications for health care providers to issue a Disability Parking Placard in Connecticut?
At Peace Love ACCESSibility, we believe understanding is the first step toward inclusion. Many people don’t realize what the actual criteria are, so let’s clear it up together!
You may qualify for a disability parking placard if you have a medical condition that makes walking difficult or unsafe.
You may be eligible if:
- You are legally blind
- You can’t walk more than about 200 feet without stopping to rest
- You use a cane, crutch, walker, wheelchair, or another person to help you walk
- You use portable oxygen or have a serious lung or heart condition that limits your ability to walk
- You have a severe arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition that limits your mobility
- You’re a veteran with PTSD and one of the above walking limitations.
A licensed medical professional must confirm eligibility before a placard can be issued.
Why it matters: Accessible parking isn’t about convenience — it’s about safety, independence, and equal access. The more we understand the “why,” the better we can support those who truly need it.
We're trying to keep the conversation going! Did you know this criteria existed? Did anything about it surprise you? Let us know your thoughts! No negative comments, please!
